  1. HP AND NOVELL ANNOUNCE STRATEGIC RELATIONSHIP TO DELIVER ENTERPRISEWIDE 
  2. NETWORKING SOLUTIONS

  4. Novell to Develop NetWare for PA-RISC Architecture;
  5. HP Distributes NetWare

  7. MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Dec. 10, 1991 - Hewlett Packard Company and Novell
  8. Inc. today announced a strategic relationship, the culmination of dozens of
  9. joint projects initiated by the companies over the past several years.

  11. Highlighting seven of the current joint projects are plans to develop
  12. NetWare to run directly on Precision-Architecture RISC* (PA-RISC) computer
  13. systems and HP's plan to distribute Novell products through its worldwide
  14. sales channels.
  15.  
  16. The relationship capitalizes on Novell's expertise in networking and HP's
  17. expertise in enterprisewide, open-systems computing solutions.  It
  18. originated as a response to customer demands for the ability to access
  19. enterprise information transparently from their desktops.
  20.  
  21. This is Novell's first announcement that it will develop NetWare, an
  22. industry-leading network operating system, on a market-leading RISC
  23. architecture.  When it becomes available in 1993, NetWare will run directly
  24. on PA-RISC and x86 processors enabling companies to integrate
  25. high-performance PA-RISC servers within NetWare computing environments.

  28. the growing community of computer users who rely on systems products from
  29. both companies, "said Raymond J. Noorda, Novell president and CEO. "The
  30. closer integration of HP and Novell products, along with the addition of
  31. HP's worldwide sales and support capabilities, are an important compliment
  32. to our efforts to work with our industry partners to provide customers
  33. comprehensive network computing solutions."

  36. developed during the past years and charts a path that will carry us far
  37. into the future," said John A. Young, HP president and CEO. " Novell's
  38. development of NetWare for PA-RISCK is a strong testimonial for the
  39. technology that drives our computer systems and will significantly benefit
  40. companies implementing enterprisewide networks."

  42. NetWare to Run Directly on PA-RISC
  43.  
  44. NetWare running directly on PA-RISC processors, without the aid of other
  45. operating systems, will take advantage of the scalability and high
  46. performance of the PA-RISC architecture.  NetWare on x86 microprocessors,
  47. supporting the integration of desktop systems with each other and with
  48. midrange and mainframe host systems.

  50. NetWare on PA-RISC processors will offer customers a growth path beyond the
  51. large installed base of networked x86-based systems and servers.  Customers
  52. will be able to complement their current network servers and migrate
  53. applications to high-end PA-RISC business systems to increase performance
  54. of enterprise operations.  NetWare on the PA-RISC architecture will be part
  55. of Novell's development of processor-independent NetWare operating-system
  56. software.

  58. The development effort is underway by Novell with support from HP.  The
  59. companies will announce availability and distribution at a later date.

  61. HP Distributes NetWare
  62.  
  63. HP has signed an agreement with Novell to distribute Novell products,
  64. including NetWare, through its worldwide direct sales channels.  HP also
  65. will offer a NetWare site-licensing agreement to selected large HP
  66. customers.

  68. Products available through worldwide distributor channels will include
  69. standard Novell software with value-added enhancements from HP that provide
  70. a foundation for improved systems integration, user interface, file-server
  71. performance and task automation.

  73. The agreement makes Novell products more widely available, gives large HP
  74. customers a single source for Novell products and enables users to purchase
  75. HP-enhanced Novell products.

  77. HP also will explore opportunities to provide preconfigured NetWare for HP
  78. Vectra personal-computer (PC) systems and servers.  Customers will not have
  79. to purchase NetWare separately, and will be able to connect HP Vectra PCs
  80. to an existing network quickly and easily.

  82. Additional product details, availability and pricing on Novell products for
  83. distribution by HP are scheduled to be announced in the first half of 1992.

  85. Additional Joint Projects
  86.  
  87. The companies also announced five additional projects currently underway
  88. between the two companies.  They include:

  90. HP NewWave software - Elements of HP NewWave desktop manager and network
  91. licensing (NetLS) will be applied to NetWare that provide increased
  92. functionality for Novell networking solutions.  This will reduce the time
  93. and skill level necessary to use and administer a NetWare network.  Product
  94. availability expected to be announced in 1992.

  104. When it becomes available in 1993, NetWare on PA-RISC processors is
  105. expected to have the features and function of 
  106.  
  107. NetWare on HP 9000 computers - NetWare services are fully supported and
  108. marketed by HP for its HP 9000 computer systems running on top of the
  109. HP-UX* operating system. Customers, through their NetWare networks, will be
  110. able to access business-critical commercial UNIX-system-based applications
  111. supported on HP's high-performance RISC-based HP 9000 Series 800 business
  112. server. HP 9000 NetWare licenses are expected to be available in the first
  113. quarter of 1992, ranging in price from  $2,725 to $24,900, U.S. list. 
  114. NetWare services, running on top of the MPE/iX operating system, currently
  115. are available for the HP 3000 computer systems.

  117. Network printing -  Novell-specific network-printing products, such as
  118. network-printer interface cards for Ethernet and Token Ring, are available
  119. today from HP for the HP LaserJet printers and HP DesignJet electrostatic
  120. plotters.  The integrated network interfaces provide flexibility in
  121. locating a peripheral where it is needed on the network and increase
  122. printing and plotting throughput.  HP and Novell continue to work together
  123. to bring to market a broad range of printers and plotters that connect
  124. directly to the network and increase overall ease-of-use.

  126. Worldwide customer support - The companies will continue to expand their
  127. relationship with the goal of providing high-quality service and support to
  128. mutual customers.  Customers will benefit from the availability of HP's
  129. comprehensive worldwide support capabilities. HP currently supports NetWare
  130. networks as part of its worldwide multivendor network-support program.  As
  131. a result of this agreement, HP will support Novell products directly as
  132. they become available from HP.

  134. Electronic messaging and directory services - The companies are
  135. investigating the integration of Novell's MHS messaging environment with HP
  136. mail systems using industry -standard interfaces for Open Systems 
  137. Interconnection X.400 and X.500 messaging protocols.

  139. Future Projects
  140.  
  141. The companies have other planned projects that are scheduled to be
  142. announced beginning in 1992 that will provide even tighter integration of
  143. information across the desktop and the enterprise.  An important area of
  144. development is network management.  Technology under investigation
  145. initially would enable coexistence on a network and could lead to
  146. interoperability between HP OpenView network-management software and Novell
  147. network-management products.
